Barbaric Oath give us five tracks of Bestial Warlust style black death metal, with heavy riffs and tons of blastbeats. It's intense stuff, and full of violence, bulldozing your ears with zero mercy. The subject matter is a refreshing change from the typical for this style - they sing about swords and sorcery subjects, with a Satanic twist. "Crom Cult," "Sword and Sorcerer," and "Dragon Lord" are some of the song titles. I really like this aspect of the band, and I feel it fits the music perfectly, with an old pulp science fantasy feel. The vocals are delivered in a mid-range raspy growl, with the occasional tortured scream when the song calls for it. There's also plenty of reverb on the vocals, giving them a nice echo and plenty of atmosphere. The drums are impressive - the blastbeats just do not stop on this album! I couldn't determine if they're played or programmed, but they're perfect either way. I fucking dig this record, and I plan on adding it to my collection when it comes out at the end of March this year. I can't wait for a full length!
